Hi, I am writing a paper on this painting for my art history class and I was wondering if you can answer these few questions: 1. why did you do this painting? 2. Is there a patron? 3.How does it fit into your body of work more generally? 4. what is your signficance in the history of American art?

Jean Hildebrant replied:

This painting is a portrait of a friend, a woman that I met with Jamaican heritage. I dressed her in garments that she had brought back from Jamaica. I found her to be a interesting subject I placed her natural light coming through the window. There is no patron. This fits into my body of work because it is a figure. I love to paint people especially people that interest me, people of different ethnicities.I also love to paint the effect of light, so this incorporates both of those elements, which is common to my work. As for significance I don't think I could answer that question I don't think that I have much significance but I hope that people can be uplifted by my work and enjoy it.Thank you for your interest , Jean

Your work is stunning!! You go down to details ...(almost) as a camera.. and so colorful! I love the game between lights and shadows. Her skin looks so much real.. Amazing!! A pleasure for me to see your paintings!

Jean Hildebrant replied:

Thank you, Isaac, for you kind remarks and for taking time to describe what you see and what appeals to you. Much appreciated! Jean

Hi Tyler, I use soft pastels. Different brands, some a bit harder than others. Nupastel and a similar type stick by Jack Richeson for harder pastels to start a drawing then progress to softer sticks such as Rembrandt and even softer to Sennelier and hand made sticks by Unison, Jack Richeson, Terry Ludwig, etc. Feel free to message me with other questions if I can be of more help :) Jean

About Jean Hildebrant

Jean Hildebrant

Born and raised in a small town in Oregon, Jean Hildebrant found herself drawn to the beauty of art at the exceptionally early age of three. With a love for art growing within, Jean spent most of her free-time drawing to develop her gift. As her personal style began to develop, she discovered that she especially enjoyed working in oil and pastel mediums. Specializing in portraits and figurative works. As Jean continued seeking out ways to improve her talents, she attended workshops held by local artists and enrolled as an art major in the local college. As a result of her efforts, she won two scholarships to Scottsdale Artists School, based strictly on the merit of her work. She has studied with nationally known artists Albert...
